Researchers assign a cresty neck score (cns) to describe degree of fat deposition and to monitor changes in neck thickness. a narrow range of scores exists; a score of 0 would describe a neck with no crest, and a score of 5 would describe a massive crest that has shifted permanently to one side, called a fallen crest.. The horse (previous to founder) had a bit of a crest but nothing of great concern. the crest is more noticeable now because (i'm guessing) her body weight is down to an acceptable level and her mane has been cleaned up and trimmed shorter.. One of my horses, has a big thick crest, any tips on how to reduce it, if you can. this crest came from when she has been allowed to look more like violet off charlie and the chocolate factory, huge and puffed up with little legs sticking out.(thankfully she never foundered).
Source(s): just to clarify, you can use sweats during exercise and they will reduce the appearance of thick necks -it's done with halter horses all the time but will not permantly alter a crested neck. would be helpful to do on a morning of a show.. Purina makes a pelleted feed that is low starch, wellsolve low starch that helps to reduce random fatty deposits on the horse's body, including the crest. it will also decrease the chance of founder. ponygirl
